Christmas is my favorite time of the year. The spirit, lights, the tree, the cookies, the gifts! You name it, I am all over it. I am one of those people that will listen to Christmas Music when the mood strikes...in July! As a kid, I loved the song "Joy To the World". All because of the begining words of "Joy to the World, the Lord has Come!" Not for the meaning, because I didn't really understand it, but because my Grandpa would sing it loud and deep with his barritone voice. Very distinct!
Last year, I really heard the words of "The Little Drummer Boy" for the first time. Here is what I learned and how it applies to all.
You know the song.
"Come, they told me Pa-rum pum pum pum
A new born King to see Pa-rum pum pum pum.
Our finest gifts we bring Pa-rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King
Pa-rum pum pum pum
rum pum pum pum,
So, to honor Him,
when we come"
The Second verse is when my learning started.
"Little Baby pa-rum pum pum pum I am a poor boy too
Pa-rum pum pum pum I have nott gift to bring Pa-um pum pum rum pum pum. That's fit to give our King.
I FEEL like that all the time! I have heard over and over we all are gifted in our own way. I was not gifted with a talent of music, dance or song. I am not one that is professional grade athletic and I am not the bright bulb in the store. This isn't me putting myself down. This is all true! What gift do I have to give to God? Who am I to think that I am good enough to be presented to the King?
Then the song goes on. The Little Drummer Boy has nothing, but he asks Mary if he can play his drum. She smiles and nods to give her consent. He goes on to do his best and play his best for this new King. And, he is rewarded with a smile!
That is all God wants from us! To give the best of what we have and at the end of our performace He will smile and say, "Well done Good and Faithful Servant."
We all have a gift. We just have to find it. That is the hard part. Sometimes, the gift is clear. A beautiful singing voice, athetic capabilities, steady hands as a surgeon, a patient smile as a teacher, a brilliant story teller. I had to ask what mine was, and I asked the most brutally honest person I know, my husband. He will tell me whether I want to hear it or not. My gift, he said "Is finding the positive in every situation. You bring the light and the fun. Not every one has a cheerleader who truely believes. That is what you are."
I ask you, during this Christmas Season, What is your gift? The one that can not be bought in a store, but can only be given by you? In 2021, go out and share that gift. God will smile upon you when you do. After all, He made you for a purpose. Let that purpose shine! Pa-rum pum pum pum!
meaning of Christmas, the birth of Christ and what that means to all.
